Long wait for platform nearly over

Rail passengers have received a welcome boost with the news that
long-awaited extension plans at a Lothian railway station are set to
get the go-ahead.

Network Rail wants to build an extra 54 metres on to its existing
platform in Bathgate, West Lothian.

Locals have campaigned for years to get the station extended to allow
more carriages to be put on the busy commuter line into the Capital.

The revamp will see the platform length increased to 147 metres,
making room for trains of six carriages, instead of the existing
maximum of four.

The development is the first in a list of major improvements expected
for the route, which include multi-million pound plans to reopen the
line from Bathgate to Airdrie.

Planners have backed the proposals, which will go before West Lothian
Council's development control sub-committee for a decision next week.

In a report to committee, planning boss Richard Hartland said: "The
proposals will help add to the success of the station."

That's all very well, but in the meantime we have to put up with 3 carriage
Turbostars in the morning rush hour. This morning, there was standing room
only when the train left Bathgate. By Uphall, people were being left on the
platform.

Is this level of overcrowding common on other routes into Edinburgh?
