Anyone know where to get photographs of the stations on the old Glasgow
Central Railwy (Kirklee, Kelvinbridge, Botanic Gardens) when they were still
operational ? Thanks in advance....

I dare say that various of the "Photographs of Ye Olde Glasgow" books that
you can often find in bargain bookshops will probably have some. I'm sure
I've seen some of these books which include pictures of Botanic Gardens
station, at street level, at least.

There's at least one site on the net (some guy called dewi, Google will find
it) which has some interesting pictures of Glasgow trams and the Subway
from days of old. He might have links to other relevant sites..?

Hope this helps a bit..

One of the "Old Maryhill" definately has pictures of the old Maryhill
Central station.

Local library usually have reference sections FULL of this sort of stuff.

Well, "darn sarf" they do, anyway.

I walked through the tunnel about 10 years ago, between the Botanic Gardens
& Kelvinbridge stations the trackbed is as though the track was lifted
recently, The sleeper depresions (and a junky shooting up) made it a tricky
walk.

From what I remember the torches we had were not that great which is why I
can recall the sleeper depressions so well cause I must have tripped up over
a dozen times because of them and when you get to the halfway point it's
very dark, you can't see any light from the portals.
When we were nearing the southern portal we could see bundles of rubbish
ahead of us that had been dumped over the years, all of a sudden one of them
jumped up and ran out at a heluva rate . When we reach the point where he
had been sitting we could smell something burning, I looked down at my feet
and noticed a hypodermic needle along with burnt bits of tinfoil, it must
have been a junky who have heard us coming through the darkness and got a
fright.
I often wondered if the scare had been enough to put him off drugs but I
doubt it.
All in all it was a good wee adventure.

then ?
It took about half an hour to walk from Kirklee via the Botanic Gardens to
the end of the tunnel near Kelvinbridge, to carry on would have meant
climbing over a high fence at the back of some dodgy tenaments so we turned
back.
The one interesting thing I remember was a large brand new free standing
electrical cabinet just within the tunnel at the eastern edge of the Botanic
Gardens station, so I think either Scottish Power or the SSEB had taken
advantage of the tunnel and ran a power line through it.

Mark, was this on an officialy-organised "tour" or just a few mates doing it
yourselves for a laugh? If official, who was it through and is another
planned (and if not, where did you get into the tunnel)?

I don't know if it's still open, but about 12 years ago some friends and I
walked through an old single-line tunnel near Peebles (near Neidpath
Castle?) - the trackbed over the river bridge appeared to have been in use
as a footpath, but this diverged before the tunnel.

Just me and a couple of mates, we had seen the vents at the botanical garden
and wondered how to get down there, we were told abour the old Kirklee
station where the bridge had been taken away so we started there, the tunnel
entrance had been fenced off but someone had cut a small hole in it and we
went from there.

It's probably almost 20 years since I last went down there, but in
those days I seem to remember that the KIrklee entrance to the Botanic
Gardens tunnel was open - or at least had only some token obstruction.
I don''t remember having any problems getting in.

On this topic, can someone tell me where this location is?? I cant figure
it out, and I'd always assumed the tunnel between Kelvinbridge and
Botanic Gardens was directly under Great Western Road.

They're all in An Illustrated History of Glasgow's Railways By
W.A.C. Smith and Paul Anderson (Irwell Press). Unfortunately it's out
of print.

There is a book called Glasgow Railway Memories by the same authors
and publishers. I haven't seen it, but I imagine it would be worth
checking.

I had a link with photos of the tunnel, but I can't find it right now.

However, have a look at this:

http://www.railscot.co.uk/Glasgow_Central_Railway/frame.htm

If I find the other link, which included photos of the platforms etc, I'll
post it here.
